The use of UAS and drones offer numerous benefits for local, national and worldwide news coverage. Drones provide immediate aerial video coverage at minimal cost opposed to the use of a helicopter. For example, a helicopter is not always available, and if one is, the cost runs about $1,500.00 per hour versus a cost of $100.00 to $200.00 for a well-trained and experienced drone operator.
Drones allow news organizations to film in locations where few journalists would be willing to go. For example, CBS’s “60 Minutes” used a drone to capture aerial footage for a segment that they did on villages that are located near Chernobyl. This area is largely abandoned since the nuclear plant explosion in 1986.
